Possibility of family members staying in Japan under the Specified Skilled Worker VISA

There are 2tipes of Specific Skills Worker VISA

Specified Skilled Workered(1)

・Period of stay

:Renewal every 1 year, 6 months or 4 months, up to 5 years in total

・Skill level

: Exam (foreigners who have completed Technical Intern Training (2) are exempt from exams)

・Japanese language level

: Japanese language exam N4 or higher (foreigners who have completed technical intern training(2) are exempt from exams.)

・Family

: Basically not allowed

Specified Skilled Worker (2)

・Period of stay

: Renewal every 3 years, 1 year or 6 months

・Skill level

: Exams

・Japanese language level

: Not required

・Family

: Possible (spouse, child)

*Only 2 industries have Specified Skilled Worker (2)

(“Construction Industry” & “Shipbuilding and Ship Machinery Industry”)

Basically, you can not call family with Specified Skilled Worker VISA(1)

However, there is an exception. foreigners who have already been living in Japan with a “dependent” visa as spouses or children could change to designated activities VISA at the same time when the dependent changes to specified skilled worker VISA.

and if you get the permission to engage in activities other than those permitted. you could also do part timer job within 28 hours a week.

if you change from an international student to a Specified Skilled Worker, families staying in Japan can continue to live in Japan with designated activities VISA.
