About 27 types of residence status stipulated in the Immigration Control Law

The 27 types of status of residence required by the Immigration Control Law can be broadly divided into four categories.

1.Status of residence for which employment is permitted

(Diplomat, Official, Professor, Artist, Religious Activities, Journalist, Business Manager, Legal/Accounting Services, Medical Services, Researcher, Instructor,  Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services, Skilled Labor, Intra-Company Transferee, Entertainer, Technical Intern Training, Highly Skilled Professinal)

2.Certificate of residence in which employment is not permitted

(Cultural Activities, Temorary Visitor, Student, Trainee, Dependent)

3.Certificate of residence by the designated activity

(Designated Activities)   ex: Working Holiday, Internship with salary, trainees, amateurs at sports, housekeepers of person who holds other Status of Residence, etc..

4.Status of residence based on status or status

(Permanent resident, Spouse or Child of Japanese nationals, Spouse or Child of Permanent Resident, Long-term Resident, etc.)
